Apparently one of the big demotivating factors is the common practice of "muter" workers - that is reassigning them to a different job in a different part of France. FT used to have a rule that people have to move job at least once every three years. Certainly it is quite common to hear of people who have to sell up and move from one side of the country to another because "Papa a été muté".

Very sad news headline. Yet to add a lighter note, I would recommend anyone familiar with France and French culture to watch "Bienvenue chez les chti". The film is hilarious and the plot evolves around the same theme (someone who is muté from one part of France to the other).
