STOP PRESS - Chirac's decision

Jacques Chirac, speaking from the Elysée Palace this evening, has decided to give presidential assent to the equal opportunities law which sets up the CPE, but has asked the government for two changes : the reduction of the trial period to one year and for employers to have to give a reason in case of dismissal. He asks also that no CPE be signed before these changes are carried out, and has asked unions, student organisations and high school pupils to take their full part in the working out of these new arrangements.
