Rue Pasteur

We've made an offer on this house. It was overpriced, and we have made a cheeky offer. So we shall see. The estate agent feels the offer is not unrealistic - the average price for houses in Bordeaux is currently about 2000 euros per sq meter, which would make our offer just a tiny bit below average.

It's on the main road into Pessac. That would put some people off, I'm sure, but it's the kind of house where you enter from the side and live in the back, so it would be fine for us. Cycle path to Gwilym's school and tram to Catrin's. Tram to city centre. Tram to university. All could work very well.

It isn't as big as it looks in the picture - they have used a wide-angle lens and pointed carefully to avoid the advertising hoarding.

Anyway, we shall see.

It certainly looks very nice even allowing for the artistic licence that estate agents automatically feed into their camera lenses. The pictures look even better by clicking and enlarging; I'm particularly impressed by the way the current owners have colour co-ordinated the terrace table and chairs with their green wheelie bin. I hope that either you, Pat or the children are keen gardeners though. Were the photographs taken in the spring or do they have their own borehole well? Everything looks so lush.
Is there much traffic noise?

I guess the pictures were taken in Spring. They do have a borehole and a watering system, but it's illegal to water your lawn in the Gironde, and it's well-brown and weedy.

There is a bit of traffic noise, but they have double glazing, a conservatory built on the road side of the house and the terrace is on the other side, so I don't think it'll be much of an issue for us. It's a normal 30 mph road, too. (Ha ha)

The Kitchen

 Our new apartment will be equipped with toilet and bathroom etc. but not with anything at all in the kitchen. Not even a sink. So we need to purchase a kitchen and engage a kitchen fitter. A friend who knows how to fit kitchens suggested buying an Ikea kitchen. "They're guaranteed twenty years and they honour their guarantee", he said. "I've proved it".
