An interesting and important reading

I giggled during one of the readings this morning.

The reason was that it began "For you are a holy people", and I thought "Oh yes, that's 1 Peter", despite the fact that the computer screen in front of me was showing Deutéronome 7 : 6 - 9, and the projection on the wall was also boldly proclaiming Deutéronome 7 : 6 - 9, and I had typed them in, and you don't need a doctorate in Romance languages to work out that Deutéronome does not mean 1 Peter!

But it is always good to have a reminder of the immense strength of 1 Peter 2 : 9 and 10 in declaring the continuity of God's people - amidst Israel before Pentecost, amidst all the nations after Pentecost. Peter takes these OT expressions which God used to describe his OT people, the descendants of Abraham, and boldly applies them all to his readers and hearers - the church - believers in Christ - Abraham's seed. Glorious! And he ranges from Deuteronomy all the way through to Hosea to do so!

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

WOW! Those words in Deuteronomy are awsome! 'Treasured posession' - gorgeous. Thanks for reminding me of them. The links with the Old Testament are so amazing and frequent. Not surprising really since it's all about salvation. We've had a good Lord's day too.
