I decided not to post any more on France's policital crisis, but I ought to note that it rumbles on. Now Jacques Chirac (Chico), Dominic de Villepin (Vilo) and the Minister for Defence (a lady who is generally known as Maman or Mamie*, because of her initials and her bearing) are all implicated in trying to smear Nicolas Sarkozy (Sarko).

A side-issue, pointed out by one of our lecturers last week, is that France has for decades been governed by an old-boys network from one of the Grandes Ecoles (the Ecole Nationale de l'Administration or ENA) and Sarko is the first prominent politician not to have come through the school. Left, right, centre or swinging from side to side, they all went through that school, except Sarko, and that is one of the reasons for his popularity. He doesn't talk like the rest of them. Could it be that the old boys have been caught ganging up on him?

Well - that's enough politics. Anyway, crises are in fashion at the moment. Everyone's having them, uh?

*Mamie is what French people tend to call their grandmother
