You say goodbye and I say hello

One big difference between North Wales and Bordeaux is the amount of coming and going. Students, mainly. They spend anything from a couple of weeks to ten years at Bordeaux, but most move on sooner or later. Even people who grew up here may have to pursue their studies elsewhere and if they get a job as a civil servant usually their first posting is in the north of France. After a couple of years they can choose to move "south of the Loire" and then they may get to come back to Bordeaux.

Anyway today one of our lads flies off to spend a year studying at Dublin. Another hopes to start a year working with an international outreach team in Cambridge.

Combine this with the new church premises and a new intake of students and it means that the start of the year is full of changes.

We have exactly the same thing in St Columba's here in Edinburgh. Every year loads of students graduate and leave, and many new ones arrive... and people get jobs away from the city etc.

Over the summer in 2007, something like 60% of the addresses in our congregational directory were removed (due to people relocating away from Edinburgh) but the congregational still grew by 40%. Trying to keep tabs on all these people, as a pastor, ce n'est pas facile!!
