Tim's been reading Marsden's biography of Jonathan Edwards

Here's something important that Jonathan Edwards said about preaching, and that Lloyd Jones agreed with him about.

Excellent! And how often have we heard, "The Lord really spoke to me that night, but I can't remember a word of what was said." The important thing being that God was worshipped at the time and the hearer's life was changed subsequently.

I'm really with you on this one Chris, and what's more Jonathan Edwards and the Doctor aren't too far behind.

(In actual fact, I feel just so reassured having followed the link.)

With the risk of being thought superstitious, I was once told by a very wise and old minister that it does the very young and very old and sleepy good to sit under the preaching of God's Word, because you just don't know what goes in. My children sat in during sermons once they could sit relatively quiet colouring or scribbling. I hope to be allowed to doze during sermons when I'm 90ish. You don't know, I might just wake up suddenly and exclaim 'Hallelujah'! In the meantime I shall sit and nod approvingly as my spirit and the Spirit agree. I may even mutter an audible 'Amen' - do preachers mind?
(Sorry for my late contribution - been away.)

That conjures up a wonderful picture.

I certainly like those approving interjections. My favourite one was from years ago when Geoff Thomas was preaching in Alfred Place about family life and teenage years and stuff, and a splendid interjectionist who usually used to say "Ah-men" suddenly came out with a resounding "You're telling me!"

Classic.

I suddenly have this vision of a certain grey haired old lady with a shawl on, sitting doing her crocheting during the service. Don't bother standing up for the hymns, we'll all excuse you. Mind, you will probably have to make even greater allowances for me by then as I'm somewhat senior in years.
