Good Friday

is not a big event in France. The kids are in school. Church services have to be in the evening, and because people often work late it means that numbers are small.

Easter Monday is a public holiday, but there's school again on Tuesday.

… not a big event in France, except in Alsace, where it is a public holiday, a legacy of the German occupation 1870 to 1918 (never trust my dates) and one of the many features of the region which make it so different from the rest of France.

Ah yes - thus avoiding the law of 1905 on separation of churches and state. Some pastors in Alsace / Lorraine are fonctionnaires, paid by the state, even !
