Thanks for the health warning, Emmanuel.

I use my gmail account for online storage anyway - in a low-tech way - by emailing files to myself!

btw - you will be proud of me. I am going to load ubuntu linux on an old laptop.

No, I never used UNIX. Always commercial computing and on Honeywell (GCOS6) and later IBM (MVS). Still, I am assured that ubuntu linux "just works"!

I am not sure that this old laptop can live again. It has a 3GB hard disk (just over the minimum) and 32MB of ram. Remember when computers had 32MB of ram ? Maybe there is a really small LINUX distro that would fit. UIbuntu and Mandriva say they need 256MB ram minimum.

It's horrible isn't it Alan. I bought a BBC Master for our kids and a 256 memory was the latest and greatest thing. I now have a steam generated Dell, (another reference to advancing years, it's a hand-me-down from my son - I've reached that stage, help, (I also dribble a little at times too)). It's got 448 on a Pentium 3 and it's about to go to that great repair shop in the sky because my Libronix is going to work it far too hard if I download the two Christmas special offer c.d.s. I'm now looking at a minimum of 2 gig of ram, probably more if I don't want to have to ditch this one in about three months time! It's not fair! But then, who-ever said that life was fair.

Certainly not me. I am "upgrading" Gwilym's computer from ME to XP even as we speak. This morning all went alarmingly well. This afternoon it boots up - and shuts down. Boots up - and shuts down? Boots up - and shuts down.

Fancy Linux instead, Gwilym?

Oh - but it wouldn't play his encyclopedia disks.


..or his games.

By the way, with the (apparently troublesome) advent of Vista, I have been told that certain versions of XP are becoming hard to get hold of. I can't remember which because I wasn't listening properly.

Yes. I popped into a computer-monger today and overheard a saleman recommending a customer not to buy a Vista-equipped PC just now. Good man, I thought. After all, there's no prizes for being first.

Mind you, they had a nice pile of paper shredders all with the Vista-ready logo on. In Britain I think I may have asked the salesman whether he was sure that the shredder would shred documents printed under Vista - but in France I thought I had better not risk it. Not with my accent/vocabulary/pronunciation.

A bit about music exams in UK and France

They're really different. I think I have already mentioned that while in the UK people generally find a private teacher for their instrument, or do it through a school scheme, here there are municipal music school, conservatoires and so on. The situation is a little more complex than I had first understood, because the schools vary in the rigidity of their organisation: the most, the conservatoires, next the municipals, then the associations. Our music school is an association, but it tends to apply the standards of the municipal schools with its programme of cycles, etc. Britain - grade 1 to 8, grade 8 being roughly equivalent to A-level, pre university/conservatoire. A brief sortie to North Wales

 Following the Great Keswick Debacle, when our volunteering at the Keswick café was sabotaged by our assorted indispositions, we had airline tickets to use up. Yes, we had not taken travel insurance, so we paid even more money to change our tickets to fly for a short visit to North Wales. This time we were able to go. We passed extremely slowly through a very crowded Bordeaux airport but in good time to get our plane. All seats in the terminal were taken so we leaned against whatever we could find while waiting to board. Hey, bags need seats, too! though sometimes pointing out to Pat, "No, that's a bag seat", makes the bag find a new refuge on the lap of the person sitting next to it... Once on the plane we quickly found our allocated seats - right at the back on the left hand side - stowed our bags and the flight was smooth and uneventful.  We had 30 minutes in Manchester to disembark, get through immigration , hustle off to the station and board our train for Shotton.
