A tip of the slung
People often ask about bloopers and howlers. Well, someone on Sunday told me of a wedding they had been to where an anglais had read 1 Corinthians 13 in French.... Or almost.
His pronunciation of amour was the problem. He did it like in Spanish - amor. OK?
But add the article and that sounds exactly like - la mort (death). Just imagine it...
1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not death, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not death, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but have not death, I gain nothing... 13 So faith, hope, death abide, these three; but the greatest of these is death.
It kind of changes things, doesn't it. It's at times like this that someone needs to tiptoe up and show a more excellent way of pronouncing the word, I think.
