Hardy Ha-ha
The computing community is all of a quiver. Thursday sees the release of the next phase of Ubuntu Linux. At present the up-to-date people are on Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. On Thursday Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Ha-ha will be available for download.
For people who, like me, vow every time Windows is updated that we will NEVER upgrade this time and this time we really are going to defect, if only Apple Macs were more affordable except they do just the same racket, and why do we need more memory and faster processors all the time just to do what we were doing before on the old Windows with less memory and slower processors, then Ubuntu could make all the difference.
Ubuntu is designed for us. It's supposed to be really easy to install - at least as easy as Windows (and who ever had a Windows install go through first time without errors ?) In fact the word is that 8.04 will even allow you to install Ubuntu as an application within Windows so you can try it out without changing ANYTHING about the setup of your PC. And Linux comes with all your office applications ready installed and your music software and photo software and browser and everything and all free of charge.
Together with the eeePC, which uses Xandros Linux, this could make 2008 the best year ever for Linux.
or so they say.

Not Hardy Ha-ha, Hardy Heron.
Well I've got I've got dapper drake running on an ancient IBM Thinkpad 600e and it loaded very easily although there was some work to do to get the sound to work. Wireless LAN works a treat! I've also got a couple of old Compaq Deskpros running with GG at work. One I'm planning to set up as a mail server. Very easy to load, very easy to update, although the Firefox updates take a while to come through. I'd say it was ideal for most people who don't want specific MS Windows software.
