I think of George VI's famous Christmas message, delivered in 1939, at the outbreak of war.
je pense au célèbre message de Noël du Roi George VI, diffusé en 1939 au commencement de la guerre.

J'ai dit au gardien de la porte de l'année:
"Donnez-moi une lampe
Pour aller sans danger vers l'inconnu."
Et il m'a répondu: "Avance dans la nuit
Et met ta main dans la main de Dieu.
Ce sera mieux qu'une lampe
Et plus sûr qu'un chemin connu."

Thanks for that Alan. The late Queen Mum reportedly detested his brother for abdicating and forcing her beloved Bertie into a public gaze he neither sought nor wanted; he was a shy retiring man who apparently had a speech defect, (a stammer I believe), which he fought valiantly to overcome. Thus he was obviously a reticent and sometimes , uninspiring speaker but none-the-less a magnificent war-time King who was greatly loved by the masses. I remember as a little boy going to see him and his Queen when they visited Leicester - to a rapturous welcome!

He was also reputed to be a very Godly man who would, according to reports - perhaps apocryphal - nip out of some public meetings to attend a prayer meeting. Would that our next King would measure up a quarter as much - some hope eh?

A bit about music exams in UK and France

They're really different. I think I have already mentioned that while in the UK people generally find a private teacher for their instrument, or do it through a school scheme, here there are municipal music school, conservatoires and so on. The situation is a little more complex than I had first understood, because the schools vary in the rigidity of their organisation: the most, the conservatoires, next the municipals, then the associations. Our music school is an association, but it tends to apply the standards of the municipal schools with its programme of cycles, etc. Britain - grade 1 to 8, grade 8 being roughly equivalent to A-level, pre university/conservatoire. France - 3 cycles, each taking about 4 years, with 3ème cycle being roughly equivalent to grade 8. Theory of music - UK to take grade 8 you need theory grade 5. The Kitchen

 Our new apartment will be equipped with toilet and bathroom etc. but not with anything at all in the kitchen. Not even a sink. So we need to purchase a kitchen and engage a kitchen fitter. A friend who knows how to fit kitchens suggested buying an Ikea kitchen. "They're guaranteed twenty years and they honour their guarantee", he said. "I've proved it".
