My family resides in San Diego, and we are coming for a year long stint in France next August. I am also an elder in a local presbyterian church here, so also am investigating our "spritual options" and came accross your site. but right now am dealing with a more basic issue -- where to live. We have come down to Montpellier and Bordeaux, primarily because of the bilingual colleges in Bordeaux -- our daughter is 10 and would be in 6th grade next year. But remember, San Diego -- we don't do well in wet weather, as if we will melt. So how have your children handled school? Have they been in French public schools or an aternative? And, how is the climate? Whatever insights you can give would be appreciated.

Best wishes for all you do.

Hi there !

Montpellier would normally be drier and hotter than Bordeaux. I don't know if there are bilingual or English schools there - you can find that out, obviously.

This year so far Bordeaux has been glorious ! Hot and dry and warm. We have hardly had any rain at all. However, this year has been unusually dry. It does rain here sometimes and we complain about it all the time, but it's not as bad as all that. I routinely go out all day with no coat and so do many other people. I only know one person who has decided not to live here because of the climate and that person has a chronic disease. I should have thought that most people could survive for a year !

Our kids are in French "private schools" - that is schools subsidised by the French state but where we pay something as well - about 50 euros a month for each child. The schools they are in are not bilingual - just French - and the first year was really very hard. We chose that option because we are staying here long term so the kids need to have very good French, and also because the International School would be too expensive an option for us.

Blessings, and keep in touch

Alan
