Hooray! Alain Juppé is back!
Well nearly.
Bordeaux has happy memories of its mayors, who have often been ex-prime ministers, like Chabon-Delmas etc. But Alain Juppé has excelled. He has really worked hard for the city, and has virtually brought the city back to life!
He was banned from public office in 2004 for his part in a fictitious jobs scam during the time when he worked for Jacques Chirac and Chirac was mayor of Paris (I think). The Bordelais consider that Juppé was simply following orders and didn't profit from the scam himself anyway.
But his period of ineligibility has now expired so last night the entire city council resigned to make way for him to be re-elected this autumn.
He also wants to be re-elected to parliament.
